A Comparison of the Molads of Tishri and the Real New Moons 1

FOR THE PERIOD OF 1900 - 2020 A.D.

The present Jewish calendar for every year is determined by calculating "the Molad of Tishri" (meaning the supposed new moon conjunction of the Seventh Month) by using a set of calculations that go back to the Greek astronomer Hipparchus in the 140's B.C. Once the Molad of Tishri for a year has been established, then the day of the week for that molad is evaluated against the 4 Postponement Rules, which are designed to avoid having the autumn Holy Days fall on inconvenient days of the week, and the date of Tishri 1, the Holy Day of Trumpets, is then established. From that date the start of the year, Nisan 1, is then established, by always placing Nisan 1 exactly 177 days before Tishri 1. With this information all the other annual Feasts and Holy Days are then determined.

It is well-known that the Molad of Tishri is mostly quite inaccurate in determining the time of the actual new moon conjunctions, though it very occasionally does get to be within one hour of the time of the real new moon conjunction. But typically the time of the Molad of Tishri may be anything from 4 hours BEFORE the real new moon conjunction to as late as over 15 hours AFTER the real new moon conjunction. The application of the Jewish calendar Postponement Rules has nothing whatsoever to do with whether the time of the molad precedes or follows the time of the real new moon conjunction. Those rules cater exclusively to upholding certain traditions pertaining to specific days of the week. They have no foundation in astronomical requirements for a correct calendar.

The Table below presents the following information for every year in the 121-year period from 1900 to 2020 A.D.:

1. The exact time of the Molad of Tishri.

2. The date of Tishri 1 in the Jewish calendar. This date is determined after the Molad of Tishri has been evaluated against the 4 Postponement Rules of that calendar. It can be either the same day as the Molad or one day after the Molad day or two days after the Molad day.

3. The exact time of the new moon conjunction for Tishri in local Jerusalem time, which is 2 hours 21 minutes ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. This information is taken from the "Astro Calendar" feature of the ONLINE BIBLE, which is produced by Larry Pierce.

4. The date of Nisan 1 in the Jewish calendar.

5. The exact time of the new moon conjunction for Nisan in local Jerusalem time. This information is also taken from the "Astro Calendar" feature of the ONLINE BIBLE.

6. An evaluation of the Jewish calendar dates against the real new moon data.

THE EVALUATION OF THIS DATA

1) All the times in the data are already presented in terms of LOCAL JERUSALEM TIME, which differs by 21 minutes from the Jerusalem "time zone" time, and by 2 hours and 21 minutes from Greenwich Mean Time.

2) For the Molad of Tishri, the times are presented in the format "hh:mm:ss" and then either as "a.m." or as "p.m.". The seconds are included here (rounded off to the nearest second) because the molad calculations produce such detailed results.

3) In the table below days are reckoned from midnight to midnight. Thus the "a.m." and "p.m." designations. This is purely for convenience and for clarity.

4) However, in evaluating this data, days are counted as starting and ending at sunset. As long as the actual new moon times for the spring are NOT in the period from 6:10 p.m. to 6:33 p.m., and for the autumn they are not in the period from 5:30 p.m. to 6:10 p.m., then it is always safe to work with 6:00 p.m. being the time of sunset at that time of year, and therefore with 6:00 p.m. having been the start of a new day.

But when the actual new moon times fall into the periods mentioned above, THEN we need to establish the REAL sunset time in Jerusalem for that particular day, to be quite certain whether a new moon conjunction was still in the last few minutes of the end of one day, or whether it only took place in the first few minutes of the next day. This borderline situation arises only very occasionally, and in those occasional cases a close examination will establish the correct day, in sunset to sunset terms, for the new moon conjunction.

For accurate sunset times for Jerusalem check the directory "JERUSALEM SUNSET TIMES".

4) Every year in the 121-year period under examination is evaluated for the following things:

A) Is THE MOLAD OF TISHRI on the new moon day, or before the new moon day, or after the new moon day?

B) Is TISHRI 1 on the new moon day, or one day after the new moon day, or two days after the new moon day?

[COMMENT: Tishri 1 is never on the day before the new moon day, even though the molad may be on the day before the new moon day. This is because the molad is very seldom more than 4 hours before the new moon time; so when the real new moon conjunction is at the start of a new day, just after sunset, then the molad is highly unlikely to be earlier than 2:00 p.m. before that same sunset, and a 12:00 noon time or later will always require a postponement to the next day. The earliest Molad of Tishri time before the actual lunar conjunction that I have come across is for 5 B.C., where the molad is October 1 at 5:56:13 a.m. and the actual lunar conjunction was on October 1 at 11:36 a.m., about 5 hours and 40 minutes after the molad time. But mostly an early molad is less than 4 hours ahead of the time of the conjunction.]

C) Is NISAN 1 on the new moon day, or before the new moon day, or one day after the new moon day, or two days after the new moon day?

D) Did THE JEWISH YEAR start in the spring, or did it start in the winter?

E) Were POSTPONEMENTS applied or were they not applied?

F) A SUMMARY STATEMENT for the year is then presented.

1) The Molad of Tishri was over 7 hours AFTER the new moon, but still on the same day as the new moon (10:17 p.m. is part of September 24 in sunset to sunset reckoning).

2) Tishri 1 was ON the day of the new moon conjunction, with Tishri 1 having started about 4 hours BEFORE the conjunction even took place (Tishri 1 started around 6:00 p.m. on September 23).

3) Nisan 1 was also ON the actual new moon day.

4) This Jewish year started in the spring.

5) No postponements were applied for this year.

6) For 1900 the annual Feasts and Holy Days would have been observed based on starting both these months ON the actual days of the new moon conjunctions.

1) The Molad of Tishri was over 14 hours AFTER the new moon, but still on the same day as the new moon.

2) Tishri 1 was one day AFTER the new moon day.

3) Nisan 1 was ON the new moon day.

4) In 1901 the spring equinox was on March 21 at 9:45 a.m. Local Jerusalem Time, so the actual new moon conjunction occurred just over 5 hours AFTER the start of spring. However, by starting Nisan 1 at sunset on March 20, it meant that the Jewish year started just over 15 hours BEFORE the end of winter. This is a borderline situation that may require a more in-depth evaluation before a decision is reached, taking all the different options into consideration.

5) The Jewish calendar invoked a one day postponement, without which it would have started the year almost 40 hours before the end of winter.

6) For 1901 the annual Feasts and Holy Days would have been observed based IN THE SPRING ON the new moon day, and based IN THE AUTUMN on one day AFTER the new moon day.
